Insulation Built for Westchester's Older Homes

Westchester has one of the oldest housing stocks in the region. According to the county’s Affordable Housing Needs Assessment (American Community Survey data), about 31% of the county’s homes were built before 1940 and nearly 58% before 1960. In Larchmont, almost six in ten homes are pre-war; in Scarsdale and Mamaroneck, close to half.

Those homes are beautiful, but most were built long before modern energy codes: balloon-framed walls with little or no insulation, plaster ceilings, knee-wall attics in Tudors and capes, and stone or block foundations that wick moisture.

Westchester also sits in Climate Zone 4A under New York’s energy code, a mixed-humid climate with cold winters and muggy summers. Insulation here has to control moisture as well as heat, so we plan every job around air sealing first, then the right material for each part of the house.

Choosing the Right Insulation for a Westchester Home

There’s no single best insulation. The right choice depends on where it goes and how your house is built. This is how we usually match materials to Westchester homes:

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Basements, stone and block foundation walls, rim joists, garage ceilings and anywhere moisture is a concern. It packs the most R-value into each inch and doubles as an air and vapor barrier.

Open-Cell Spray Foam

Rooflines, cathedral and vaulted ceilings, and interior walls where you want an airtight seal and quieter rooms at a lower cost per inch.

Dense-Pack & Blown-In

Attic floors and hard-to-reach spaces where blown-in cellulose or fiberglass is the most practical, budget-friendly upgrade.

Mineral Wool (Rockwool)

Soundproofing between floors and around media rooms, plus fire blocking. We often pair it with spray foam.

The Cloud9 Advantage

Premium Chemicals

We spray only premium foam made by NCFI Polyurethanes, a NASA partner for over four decades. We never economize on the material that goes into your home.

Top of the Line Equipment

Computer-controlled proportioners keep the two foam components at the exact 1:1 ratio the manufacturer specifies. That ratio is what makes foam cure fully and perform safely on every job.

Verified Quality

Our equipment records data from every application, and every customer gets a data-backed report on their installation, so there’s no guesswork about what’s in your walls and roof.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Your free inspection and written estimate happen before installation day. Once you’ve approved the plan, here’s how the day goes:

  1. Prep & protection. Our crew covers floors, finishes and belongings, and seals off the work areas from the rest of the house.
  2. Installation. Certified installers apply foam with calibrated, computer-controlled equipment.
  3. Cleanup. We trim, vacuum and haul away every bit of debris before we leave.
  4. Cure & re-entry. The house stays empty while we spray and for a full day after, giving the foam time to cure and the rooms time to air out.
  5. Your quality report. You receive a data-backed report on the foam installed in your home.

Westchester Insulation FAQ

Which Westchester towns do you serve?

Rye, Rye Brook, Port Chester, Harrison, Purchase, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Scarsdale, White Plains, Armonk, Banksville, Chappaqua, Mount Kisco, Bedford, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Pound Ridge, South Salem, Cross River and Vista. If you’re not sure whether we cover your address, just call.

Are you licensed in Westchester County?

Yes. Cloud9 Spray Foam holds Westchester County license WC LIC #WC-40826-H26, which you can verify with the county’s online license lookup. We’re also licensed in Connecticut (CT LIC #0698762) and fully insured.

Can you insulate an older home with plaster walls?

Yes. We use a system that only requires opening part of the wall, and in most cases just small sections of plaster or sheetrock. We’ll connect you with a drywall company we work with and coordinate the schedule. They open the walls or floors before we arrive, we remove the old fiberglass and fill the cavities with spray foam, and they come back to restore the openings.

Is spray foam a good fit for Westchester’s climate?

Yes, when it’s specified correctly. Westchester’s mixed-humid climate makes moisture control important, so we typically use closed-cell foam on foundation walls and rim joists, and choose open- or closed-cell for rooflines based on how the roof is built.

Do you insulate additions, finished basements and new homes?

Yes, and they’re some of our favorite projects. New additions often feel colder or hotter than the rest of the house. Sealing them with spray foam pulls them into the home’s thermal envelope. We also insulate finished basements, bonus rooms and new custom homes before drywall.

How long does a typical project take?

Most homes take 1 to 2 days, depending on scope. We’ll confirm the schedule when we inspect.

Do I need to leave the house during installation?

Yes. Plan to be out of the house while we spray and for 24 hours after, while the foam cures and the rooms air out. We’ll go over the details with you ahead of time.
